Iodoform-impregnated gauze packs into a deep or draining wound to keep the cavity open for continued drainage while providing mild antiseptic action from the iodine-releasing compound. Used where a wound needs to heal from the inside out rather than closing over a pocket that could trap infection.
Some wounds shouldn't close at the surface before the deeper tissue has had a chance to heal and drain, and packing strips exist to keep that space open deliberately. The iodoform component adds mild antiseptic action on top of the physical packing function, which is useful in wounds with ongoing risk of contamination.
This is a sterile product for direct wound-cavity use, distinct from the plain sterile packing strip stocked alongside it – the choice between the two usually comes down to whether the added antiseptic action is wanted for a given case.
