Confirming the Vein Before Committing the Catheter

First-attempt success on a peripheral stick depends heavily on how quickly and clearly blood flash shows up in the hub. The notched needle design here is meant to produce a faster, more visible flash than a standard bevel, which matters most on the harder sticks – a dehydrated patient, a rolling vein, or a limb that's already been through two prior attempts that day. After the catheter is in place, the shielding mechanism activates with a push of the button and fully encloses the needle tip, removing the recap-and-discard step that carries most of the exposure risk. The wings then do their job for the rest of the catheter's dwell time, giving a flat, stable base for tape or a transparent dressing rather than a bare hub that shifts every time the patient moves.
