Blood smears, fecal exams, skin scrapes, and ear cytology all start the same way: a sample on a slide under a microscope. It's an easy item to overlook when planning lab supply orders, right up until a busy diagnostic day runs the current box down to nothing. Vet tech programs teaching microscopy, hematology, and parasitology technique go through slides at a similarly high rate, since each student needs their own reps preparing and reading a smear rather than sharing a handful of slides around a classroom.
